Cats are nocturnal animals, so it is only natural for them to be very active at night. Therefore, finding a cat that sleeps right through the night is a very rare thing indeed. All of my cats have slept in bed with me and cuddled up, all through the year, especially during winter. Then we got Isabella, the night time TERROR!
As I am lying here writing this blog she is running around the room and climbing the curtains. She normally sleeps by your feet, or on the floor, or on her scratch post in the lounge but, much like a small child, if she is awake after her normal bed time, she gets super wild and will not lie down for two seconds.
Petstages has a wonderful Night Time Toys range that focuses on glow in the dark material. Flashing lights and silent materials are used to ensure peaceful nights for you. As seen below, there are four of these Petstages night time toys offered in South Africa; Whisper Track with Twinkle Ball, Quiet Glow Play Pair, Twinkle Ball and Flashing Firefly Mat.

Isabella loves the Petstages Twinkle Ball and the Petstages Quiet Glow Play Pair and plays with them all the time and the material glows in the dark in places. She loves the Petstages Flashing Firefly Mat even though it took a while for her to get used to it. I have only purchased the Petstages Whisper Track with Twinkle Ball in the past week. She loves the furry ball on the top but is not quite sure how to make the ‘light up’ ball move yet. I keep showing her how to push it so it spins and she loves it when the light starts flashing. I’m sure that she will grow into it like she did with the mat.

These Petstages products are great to leave out if you have a very active night time cat but remember to pack all the noisy ones away before you go to bed. Remember that if you do have an indoor only cat they need lots of stimulation, and especially at night, as they do not burn up the same amount of energy as they would running wild outside. So remember, that you still have an outdoor minded animal even though they are happy to be indoors. Take them for a walk every couple of days; see my review on harnesses for cats here. Provide stimulation by providing toys and activities for while you are out during the day and at night when they want to stay up and play with you.
Do your research! Look up information about your cat’s breed and their characteristics as some cats, like Toygers, Tonkinese, Siamese, Oriental and Bengals, need a lot more stimulation and movement compared to cats like Ragdolls, British Shorthair, Himalayan, Ragamuffins and Persians, who all are very low energy indoor cats. If you find your cats are very naughty and rather wild, they probably have a lot of pent up energy and do not know what to do with it. They are just like toddlers.
If you do not have a cat yet and are looking to buy a breed that suits you, then do your homework and see what cat will suit your needs and your home. There are many online surveys that you can take to see what breeds will suit you. Do a few of them and you will see what common results you get, and remember, to keep your partners needs in mind too!
