When we first moved in, and I was begging for a cat, the one condition Ray gave me was that we put the cat on a medical aid.
Everyone knows how expensive vet bills are but can you really put a price on your furry loved one? The reason I have gone with a medical aid for Isabella is that my self-control, when it comes to saving every month for a when if or what if, is not very good. The idea of a debit order coming off every month and knowing that we are covered no matter what is a no brainer, it also eliminates the temptation of taking my savings account out on a shoe shopping date.
So I closed the online shopping tab in my browser and googled “pet medical aid". I got a handful of options as this is a rather new thing in South Africa. Some of the names I got; One Pet, Petsure, MediPet SA and Rogz.
It became very clear that most of these medical aids do not cover routine care such as annual vaccinations, dental, etc they only cover emergencies, prescription food and medicines.
If I am paying every month for what ifs and I still have to save every time she will need vaccinations or have to get a pet sitter etc I would be permanently broke. That is when I came across Petsure. Underwritten by Hollard, a very well-known and reliable insurance company in South Africa.
They cover all routine care such as vaccinations, dental, tick and flea treatment and kennel fees for a small top up fee. A great bonus is that Ray's sister has her dog, Jack, on Petsure and if she referred me she will get one month’s premiums paid back to her.
There other perks; the more pets you have the less you pay, there different coverage options (100%, 80% and emergencies only. Cats can be registered between 8 months and 8 years and are covered for life.
So in the end R208, 00 a month and Isabella is covered for everything she will need. No questions asked. This is a great thing to have for any pet owners.
